Popular former West Coast and Brisbane player Peter Davidson has died after a six-year cancer battle, aged 60. Davidson was a member of the Eagles’ inaugural team in 1987, playing in the history-making win over Richmond in their first-ever AFL game. Injuries restricted him to just one more senior game for the club and he announced his retirement at the end of 1989. But that was short-lived and he joined the Brisbane Bears for the 1990 season.
He was unable to attend as he was gravely ill in palliative care in his home town of Collie, which is about 200km from Perth. Having learned of Davidson’s health battle, a group of his former teammates travelled to see him for one final goodbye on Saturday before he died on Tuesday. West Coast and Brisbane both paid tribute to their former player, while a number of fans left touching comments on social media.
