TORONTO — Canada's main stock index was flat on Wednesday, helped by strength in battery metal and technology stocks, while U.S. stock markets moved lower. The S&P/TSX composite index was up 13.18 points at 21,656.05.

TORONTO — Canada's main stock index was flat on Wednesday, helped by strength in battery metal and technology stocks, while U.S. stock markets moved lower.Kevin Headland, co-chief investment strategist at Manulife Investment Management, said the TSX has been outperforming its U.S. counterparts in recent days, led by commodities gains on Wednesday.

StatCan reported its consumer price index for March was up 2.9 per cent compared with a year ago, up from a 2.8 per cent year-over-year increase in February. “Inflation kind of came out really around expectations, so there wasn't really any material surprise,” said Headland. Headland said the markets are looking forward to earnings announcements as companies gear up to report their first quarter results for 2024.
