Jeremy Warner: Let the markets decide when it comes to minimum wages. That way we'd all be wealthier

One is this week’s near 5pc rise in the minimum wage, or what the Government likes to call the National Living Wage. The latest increase puts the Government on target to reach its goal of a minimum wage of 60pc of medium earnings by 2020.

No we dam well won’t be but the rich would sure as hell get richer. History shows that

Is Jeremy Warner crazy? Who is he?

Because that worked out so well in the past... FFS

That strategy is going well in other countries. Most businesses pay the least amount possible.

Apart from those earning the least, of course

Have always seen the minimum wage as a means that larger businesses can use to get their tax, back by our government subsidising their low wages with benefits. if they dodge paying tax here, absolute bulls eye for their profits. Who first started this corporation gravy train?

What a lot of crap. You don't fool anyone. Trickle down is a myth.

The markets are controlled by the billionaires. They have proven time and time again not to care about ordinary people.

If/When it was up to markets and corporations slavery would still be a thing today. With free labor and higher profit margins. I’m happy it’s not totally up to markets

Just vote brexit party. Lab and cons leavers will unite with it and you will have a true cross party party. I would advocate a 40 X minimum wage for anyone in the company including share options then to get more money the ececutve must increase wages at the bottom

Let the people decide maximum wages

And by “we” you mean the people who don’t get paid minimum wage.

Such as raisin the minimum wage by 11 pound a week and raising the utilities by 15 pound a week.

You can tell how much employers care about their workers by the huge rise in zero hour contracts & food banks

The markets? Who are run by Eton coke heads? No thanks.

doesn't work that way - just look at the US with no real wage growth in decades & many people barely surviving - costs rising so average person's wealth decreasing - many people need to work 2 jobs to survive

The markets deciding is one of the main reasons we are in this mess.

I’m a cash strapped small biz owner who’s been hit by this min wage hike. Most biz in the U.K. are SMEs, not multinational corporations with bottomless pockets. All those who support wage controls, my question is: ‘Where is the money coming from to pay for this’?

Laissez-faire utilitarianism, “classic liberalism” libertarianism is not an complete and therefore adequate model. That has been proven time and time again when the system reset either through some kind of revolution or recession.

Let the peasants eat cake.

The 'markets' i.e. big business fought tooth and nail against the minimum wage. Remember their project fear? Millions of job losses etc.

FFS. Are there any depths this filthy rag will not plumb? I despair at the abject ignorance of the so-called ‘journalists’ who merely put their name to rubbish like this when they have obviously not even read or critiqued the content of the stuff given to them.

Yeah right 🤣🤣🤣🤣

The neocons calling for feudalism and tithes.... This is why we need UKLabour with urgency. ForTheMany not the 0.5% MinimumIncomeGuarantee

Thing is, *your* 'we' isn't the same 'we' as the people who do those minimum wage jobs. Meanwhile BorisJohnson takes £300k pa bung for writing a few lines of badly subbed, badly thought through copy.

Not if you’re an employee you won’t! All very well ‘trusting’ people whose primary goal is to consider profit, but don’t be surprised when the majority actually do just think about profit & not the well-being of their employees. Get rid of welfare too & you end up more poor folk.

I would say that the markets are better equipped to decide on the maximum wages (incl. bonuses etc.). Just set a base pay rate (perhaps $100,000). If the company makes a profit the markets can decide how big the bonus can be. Don't 'screw' the minimum wages.

Utter nonsense!

Lets get back to feudualism and slavery. Will be even wealthier

Which obviously accounts for the stunning riches of workers in Bangladesh, the Philipines, etc.
