One person has died and two others have been hospitalised after being diagnosed with meningococcal disease in WA. The state’s health department said the three were “older adults” and that the cases were not linked. Two cases were caused by strain B of the disease, while the other was caused by strain W. The adults still in hospital are “recovering”. The three meningococcal cases are the first to be reported in WA in 2024. Last year, nine cases were reported and there were no deaths.

The disease is treated with antibiotics and most people will recover however five to 10 per cent of those diagnosed will die, according to the health department. “About 15 per cent may experience long-term complications such as hearing loss, limb amputations or brain damage,” the department said. There are 13 different strains, and vaccines are available to protect against the common disease-causing strains like A, B, C, W and Y.
