A soft Brexit would safeguard the economy, says Guardian columnist Owen Jones

Consider this scenario. The Brexit national crisis is resolved on terms that protect the economy and hard-won workers’ rights. The national conversation moves on to the NHS , child poverty and housing. Another referendum, more poisonous and bitter than the last, and one that could easily be won by leave all over again, – polling currently shows more people would prefer to leave without a deal than to stay in the EU outside of London and Scotland – is avoided.

Aggressive language from one so little and determined to portray himself as the eternal victim?

OwenJones84 Any Brexit is going to make any subsequent Labour government ineffective because their entire time in power will be spent hamstrung by the consequences

Owen Owen you're the Uri Geller of rubbish! Bent!

For corbyn to resign

OwenJones84 Gettin rid of Corbyn and Abbott would be a start.

OwenJones84 I wholeheartedly agree with you about tearing down the toxic Tory party & installing a new government to put the good of the people first. But your statement that 'more people would prefer to leave without a deal than to stay in the EU' is a clumsy misinterpretation of the stats,

UKLabour couldn’t even run the country properly, how the hell are they going to resolve the Brexit Crisis OwenJones84? 🤔

Refers to that cherry picking of the 'no deal' poll showing that multiple pro Brexit Labour figures (including owenjones84) have been played like cheap violins

Owen Jones😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂moron

Stitch up a 'soft' brexit with the Tories and offer no public vote Labour will be absolutely thrashed at the next GE.

OwenJones84 I might just have to wait and see on this one - Owen does have form in fail you know. Russell Brand has endorsed Labour – and the Tories should be worried | Owen Jones

OwenJones84 Love this quote from your piece about the need to avoid a second referendum because Leave would probably win it. You totalitarian twerp.

Now that's a Brexit upland I'd be behind.

OwenJones84

OwenJones84 Are you joking

OwenJones84 The only solution to your brexit idiocy is that the EU says enough you are out for 5 years after which UK can re-apply for EU membership, but the UK must pay for all EU brexit costs. MichelBarnier brexit jeremycorbyn

This is premised on the idea that Remainers won't mind soft-Brexit. Many will, & so will most Brexiters: it will be categorised by both as 'Remain Minus'. So it won't be any less divisive than anything else, & Labour will be implicated in it.

OwenJones84 Jeeeeeeeezzzaaaaaaa, jeeeeezzzzaaaa, we luv yoo yeah yeah yeah, but give people a vote, Tory PM is getting one,.!.

OwenJones84 Mmmm OJ, u r one of the 1st to challenge intemporate, aggressive & abusive language because, as u rigtly point out, it drives other 'nasty' people. So why oh why do u stoop to saying '.... tear down the Tories too...' 😮

OwenJones84 You're there but you're still over-egging it. Any Political Declaration will do - none of them will really come to any fruition. The Transition Period will be extended and with a new government in 2022, we reform English politics and rejoin.

OwenJones84 All the time Corbyn,Abbott and McDonnell are the “leading lights”, Labour won’t b elected to government. A strong government needs a strong opposition, something we haven’t had since the early 90s

OwenJones84 Yay! Lose our EU rights and demonstrate that it’s fine to cheat in public votes. Can’t wait to rig a few elections myself. Seems the winners get to do what they like and the cheated ones have to compromise and reconcile. All endorses by your friendly columnist.

... after all, the facts tell us this now and now we know what the deal is or outcome really will be. We can all learn from the first campaign based on lies from Leave and breaking the law. This is not the time to give up hope

OwenJones84 What planet you on? As much as I hate tories there’s no way they will bow down and listen to Corbyn

‘This might read as crude partisan politicking at a time of national turmoil.’ Yes it does OwenJones84 Im concerned about losing the PeoplesVote but we have to have faith British people who voted and won narrowly, take a breath as we all need to and realise they were wrong...

We need a confirmation referendum. If people vote for no-deal knowing what we know now, then so be it. It’s completely wrong, undemocratic and arrogant to hold only referendums if you think your view will win

People need to get real... Delivering some sort of Brexit is the least destructive option for Labour. Any pursuit of a Second Referendum or remaining might be popular in London, Scotland and some Remain places but it will be a huge loss to UKIP, Lib Dems and Tories elsewhere

HAHA Labour your finished.

Interesting article, as always.

Is it Twit or a Twitter

Labour doesn't stand a hope in hell's chance. I saw a survey earlier, showing Farage had 64% of the votes to be next PM, while Conservatives had 3% and Labour 4%. They're BOTH finished!

Go home Owen, you're drunk.

Concerning, 'Tories’ infection with rightwing populism' There and here (Republicans) One must conclude this is no so called infection, this is self mutilation, their natural essence to inflict radicalism, racism and hate, generations ago this was fascism! Reject Them This Day!

Ha ha! Needless to say it involves giving Jeremy his Brexit. Owen, the master tactician speaks again.

Or we could just REMAIN.

Wrong Wrong Wrong if Labour have anything to do with Brexit they are toast just like the Torys ! The softer the Brexit the greater price we pay in vassalage to the EU. The only way out of this mess for everyone is a People's Vote based on A Remain v clean Brexit !

A soft Brexit may now prove to be all that can be achieved, but if so, it represents a catastrophic failure. Yes, the economic impact will be slight, but the UK will cease to be a sovereign nation as we will have no influence. Is this really the best we can aspire to?

But enough of Owen. Can we have a more credible commentator, please?

Little owen at it again

We don’t want a Labour soft Brexit. We want no Brexit.

Labour as usual on the fence trying to frustrate BREXIT No interested in BREXIT & getting us out of the EU Honouring the Referendum Only interested in gaining power. The Chaos of Cultural Marxists - watch your backs. Socialism always ends in starvation and Genocide

Love how Owen casually dismisses ‘London and Scotland’ and suggests something that will enrage Brexiters as his solution. It is delusional to think that a soft Brexit is going to heal the divide.

Labour should focus on GeneralElection rather than resolving Brexit which is now beyond solving! PeoplesVote
