Essendon coach Brad Scott believes disgraced former AFL player Tarryn Thomas deserves a second chance with another club, despite the current sensitivities around violence against women — particularly at his club. Thomas was sacked by North Melbourne — where he was first coached by Scott — after a string of off-field behavioural issues, the last and most significant of which was his inappropriate treatment of women.
Questions raised over Brad Scott’s violence against women ‘contradiction’. Given the current climate of violence against women in this country, social tensions around a possible return to the AFL for Thomas are high. Many have denounced the suggestion that the 24-year-old should be afforded a second chance at the privilege of playing AFL, including Brownlow medallist and domestic violence prevention activist Jimmy Bartel, who grew up witnessing his father abusing his mother.
