Treasurer Jim Chalmers has backed in the deflationary impact of Labor's 2024 Budget as he was fiercely grilled by Sky News host Peter Stefanovic about his government's move to send $7.8 billion in cost-of-living relief out into the Australian economy.

“The budget is designed to put downward pressure on inflation not upward pressure on inflation,” the Treasurer added. Big government spending has underpinned Mr Chalmers budget through cost-of-living relief and the Future Made in Australia Act. Independent economist Warren Hogan said the budget will “technically” help ease the cost of living but the reality of inflation is very “complex”.
