Peter Dutton’s plan to slash immigration to free up housing and ease population pressures would cost billions, Treasurer Jim Chalmers has warned, accusing the opposition of plucking numbers “out of the air”.

Already a subscriber?pledged the Coalition would slash the permanent migration programThe Liberals and Nationals will ban foreign investors and temporary residents from buying established homes for two years, and cut net overseas migration to 160,000 places in the first year of a Coalition government.

An intake of 140,000 would take permanent migration back to pandemic levels, when border closures prevented the Morrison government from filling all the 160,000 spots allocated to permanent residency.Former senior Immigration Department official Abul Rizvi said Mr Dutton’s changes were misguided. Mr Rizvi expects Labor and the Coalition will struggle to achieve their targets, noting international education and the skilled worker intake would both have to be cut.
