Peter Woodforde’s children know he is doing it tough - but they don’t know he is homeless and living in a tent. Woody, as he is affectionately known, says his kids would be distraught if they saw his living conditions, especially as winter approaches in Adelaide. He is living in a gazebo wrapped in tarps in the city’s northeast and is unsure if it will collapse when heavier rains hit.
St Vincent de Paul said some days, the men’s shelter was turning away 15 people, while the women’s shelter was rejecting about five people because they were at capacity. “Both centres indicate that guests are staying longer because there is nowhere else for them to go, which creates a bottleneck,” a spokesperson said. The homeless support agencies hope the state government will see the desperation and commit more funding to their services.
