Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young has said putting major sporting and cultural events behind a paywall could turn Australia into a society of “haves” and “have nots”. The Albanese government is attempting to pass amendments to anti-siphoning laws through the Prominence and Anti-Siphoning Bill — which has been heavily criticised for favouring streaming giants.
Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young joins the battle to keep TV free. The bill passed the House of Representatives, however, Hanson-Young said it would not get her support in the Senate unless important changes were made to ensure access to sport is free across digital devices. The bill in its current form prevents streaming services such as Amazon, Apple, and Disney from buying exclusive “broadcast rights” to major sporting events, such as the AFL and Olympics.
