Canberra man charged with murder and arson after fatal Holt house fire allegedly lit ‘due to a dispute’

A 38-year-old man from Canberra was charged with murder and arson on Thursday after allegedly lighting a house fire that killed a man known to him “due to a dispute”. The body of a 36-year-old man was found inside the fire-ravaged home on Giltinan Pl, Holt, after the blaze was extinguished on May 22. The man allegedly “purchased accelerant which was used to assist in setting the house on fire,” ACT Police said. “Police believe the house was set on fire due to a dispute between the men.

” Emergency services were called to the home about 2.50am on the morning of the incident, and later deemed the fire suspicious after the body was located. “Police allege the man should have known that the deceased would have been in the residence at the time of the arson, and therefore the charge of murder is appropriate,” ACT Police said. Over a week after the blaze, the 38-year-old man was arrested at a home on Northbourne Ave about 7.30am on Thursday.
