Look at Cape Town model, watchdog tells struggling SA produce markets

A Competition Commission inquiry has recommended that SA's key national fresh produce markets look at fostering private-public partnerships or introducing"corporatisation" to fix their operations.

The inquiry by SA's top antitrust body found the"overwhelming views of stakeholders" is that the condition of the major fresh produce markets such as Johannesburg, Tshwane and Durban are"bad and deteriorating, mainly due to problems that can be characterised as funding issues". The provisional report, which was officially released at a press briefing at the Competition Commission offices in Pretoria on Tuesday, follows a fresh produce market inquiry initiated 14 months ago.South Africans need to be in the know if we want to create a prosperous future.
