A Perth woman has admitted she faked her own death in court after she was caught trying to claim a life insurance payment. In her first District Court appearance, Karen Sakilld plead guilty to gains benefit by fraud and intent to defraud knowingly uses any record which is false. The court heard on February 7, 2024 the 42-year-old pretended to be her partner to start a claim with a life insurance company that claimed she had died in a Broome crash in December the previous year.
A week later, she was paid out $718,923 by the insurance company into a bank account she opened in her partner’s name. Over the following two days she made payments from the account, which were flagged by the bank as suspicious and the account was frozen. In a bid to unfreeze the accounts she went to Palmyra police station to get several forms of ID certified by an officer. Once they were certified, she altered them and submitted them to the bank but they failed verification.
