Good quality plants, delicious scones in the tea room - and a resident cat

Decades ago it started with a couple of polytunnels - now Hollybeck Garden Centre has evolved into a destination. But, excuse the pun, it has always stayed true to its roots.

"It's very busy, very hectic. It's a good community hub. We always try and source UK if we can but it's not always possibly because everybody likes everything. We have good relationships with Lincolnshire growers, some of whom we have dealt with for decades. The roots of the firm go down quite deep," added Chris whose sons, aged 15 and 18, also help out at the business.

More recently the garden centre has started selling trees more suited to smaller gardens, with a maximum height of three to four metres. Fruit trees and grow-your-own vegetables have really taken off since the pandemic. "Our veg has been up 31 per cent this year - beans, courgettes, tomatoes, cucumbers and potatoes. We also sell a lot of bare root fruit. Raspberries are really popular," said Danielle.

Danielle said: "The white pom pom flower is really popular. It holds its shape at the back of a border. It tolerates sun as long as the soil is damp, it tolerates semi shade, it's got some height, it holds its flowers all summer, and then at the end of the season when the flower heads dry, it holds its flowers all winter as well so it creates wonderful structure all year round even though its a deciduous.

Helen Fynn-Allen, tea room manager, said: "People love the friendly family atmosphere. We are always happy to have a chat - we get some customers who come in four or five times a week. It's part table service so nobody has to carry their own food. It's all homemade, cooked from scratch. The cakes and the scones are really popular, especially the coffee and walnut cake, cherry and almond scones and our cheesecakes are to die for. They are enormous.

The garden centre's general manager Lauren Devonshire loves the location of her workplace and is certain customers do too. "We're a destination. We have a lot of regulars who come here to meet with friends. People will make a day of it. "When we are really busy and the tea room is really busy, obviously when its sunny, we tend to keep most of the power on-site. It's amazing, I would never have thought it. It's been a big thing here."
