A nurse has been attacked at the Royal Adelaide Hospital Emergency Department, the nurses’ union said. The staff member was hit by a patient who was mentally unwell on Thursday. It’s unclear how serious the nurse’s injuries are. SA Health said a security guard quickly intervened and the victim was being offered support. Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation SA chief executive Elizabeth Debars said other staff had been left shaken by the incident.
SafeWork slapped an intervention order on the Royal Adelaide Hospital, directing it to improve workplace conditions that it said were putting staff at risk of psychological and physical harm. It comes after an inspection of the emergency department, where inspectors found measures were not in place to reduce risks as a result of high demand. The hospital has been given until July 9 to improve workplace conditions or face a $250,000 fine.
