Cristina Chang is just back from Hong Kong after two decades, where she went from youngish Mallesons lawyer to financial hard-head with Olympic-level strength.

Life on a trading floor is a daily fight – scrapping for trades, managing risk positions, selling deals and navigating financial markets.

Having forged her banking career in asset-backed financing and securitisation in Hong Kong, she wanted to return to the city where it all started, where she went to school and university, where she got her first job and where her parents still live.So Chang, a managing director at Citi for the past decade or so, put her hand up for the bank’s top markets job in Australia – one of the top sell-side markets jobs in the country.

As for the markets job, Chang says she is into profitable businesses and “franchise value” rather than top-three market positions, and will not instruct her team to chase market share at all costs. She wants to grow revenue and is targeting big cross-border capital flows, Australia’s superannuation funds deploying capital offshore and foreign investors coming to Australia.

Citi hosted a bunch of the world’s biggest investors – Canadian pension funds, Middle East sovereign wealth funds, asset managers BlackRock and Blackstone, Australia’s super funds and so on – for the Citi A50 Australia Economic Forum in Sydney last week, with the government.
