A Texas man who admitted to trading sexually explicit images with a Mobile girl he met online will go to prison for 10 years, a federal judge ruled Monday.

The 10-year sentence is the mandatory-minimum prison term required by law. Chief U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Beaverstock noted that the victim’s mother wrote a letter requesting a longer sentence. The judge said he would accept the recommendation by prosecutors. In addition to the prison term, the judge ordered Martinez to register as a sex offender and submit to supervision by the U.S Probation Office for the rest of his life.

“I also want to urge you to take advantage of the time you’ll be in prison and improve your education,” he said.“I feel really guilty for what I did, and I want to apologize to the victim’s family,” he said. “Unfortunately, a lot of that, I guess, guidance and just care one would have hoped for Mr. Martinez just wasn’t there…. It’s been a very hard and discouraging path for him,” she said.
