The price of eggs will be hiked as early as next week due to the country’s ongoing bird flu crisis, Ritchies IGA supermarket boss Fred Harrison has warned. Two of Australia’s biggest supermarkets, Woolworths and Coles,have limited the number of egg cartons which can be purchased at any one time, due to the outbreak of bird flu. Eight farms in Victoria, two in NSW and one in the ACT have been forced to close in a bid to stop the spread of avian flu.
On Wednesday, Harrison said he would introduce buying limits in Victorian outlets of the country’s biggest independent supermarket chain. He said he also expected the prices to be hiked due to an increase in demand of between 10 and 20 per cent. “Our egg supplier in Victoria met with us and said they are now starting to run a bit short,” Harrison told NewsWire. “Demand is increasing significantly. As of today in Victoria, we are moving to a two-pack limit on eggs.
