President Joko Widodo of Indonesia has decided to move the capital of South-East Asia's largest economy away from Jakarta on the crowded main island of Java, the Planning Minister has said.
"The President chose to relocate the capital city to outside of Java, an important decision," Bambang Brodjonegoro told a news conference after a Cabinet meeting, adding that the administration had yet to pick a new location. He said moving the capital from Jakarta, on the north coast of Java, could take up to 10 years, citing examples such as Brazil, Malaysia and Kazakhstan.
Very interesting. Maybe someone has realized the limits to growth of big cities. Jakarta is also threatened from sea level rises. It will take much longer than 10 years to find a new location and start construction although the transmigrasi program is already going on for decades
So Indonesia currently doesn't have a capital city? 🤔
