South Africa: Cannabis can create jobs and grow the economy new report argues By Karabo Mafolo

In 2017 Lesotho legalised cannabis for medical use. In 2018 Zimbabwe followed suit by legalising cannabis for medical and research purposes. In 2018 the Constitutional Court ruled that private use of cannabis is not illegal in South Africa.

According to the report, the annual consumption rate in Africa is 11.4% while the global average is 6%. The cannabis industry has the potential to create work opportunities for both low-skilled and high-skilled workers, it said. According to the report, three of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals can be achieved by legalising the cannabis industry.There are good reasons to legislate . All the people who were saying ‘what about the harm?’ It’s been scientifically proven that there is no harm,” said Charl Henningh fromThe second Sustainable Development Goal is about ending hunger and achieving food security and promoting sustainable agriculture.

According to the report, legalising medical cannabis could assist people suffering anxiety, chronic pain and other conditions.
