Opinion: If it’s 'the economy, stupid,' why did Modi win?

Indian supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party celebrate in Hyderabad on Friday. By Milan Vaishnav May 25 at 7:00 AM Milan Vaishnav is senior fellow and director of the South Asia Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He is host of “Grand Tamasha,” a weekly podcast about Indian politics.

Five years ago, Modi campaigned on the promise of ushering in “acche din” for the Indian economy by generating millions of jobs, stimulating rapid growth and revitalizing India’s sluggish investment cycle. While Modi enacted several economic reforms — such as a nationwide sales tax and a new bankruptcy code to wind up failing businesses — large parts of his promised economic narrative never materialized.

In fact, the available evidence suggests that Modi’s poll numbers are far better than his own party’s: 32 percent of respondents to one post-election survey say that they would not have voted for the BJP alliance if Modi were not the prime ministerial candidate. The terrorist attack on Indian forces in the state of Jammu and Kashmir in mid-February and the government’s subsequent airstrikes on terrorist camps in Pakistan further fueled Modi’s stature, reinforcing the very characteristics that Modi often touts — leadership, decisiveness and muscularity.

Nationalism and jingoism

Why did Trump win. Face the truth. He will win again.

Thé truth in modi and his govt will soon unveiled .. no one can cover the truth... the truth will unveil one day or the other...

Government corruption would be a good place to begin to look.

Because 2019 India isn’t 1992 America?

Analysis: Economy, Hindu-first impact are Modi's challengesNEW DELHI (AP) — India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi described his first term as 'filling in potholes' — shorthand for addressing the country's basic needs. In a campaign speech in April,... Horrible analysis that gets basic facts wrong. First of all, PM Modi and BJP are not about 'Hindu nationalism.' They are actually moderate liberals who respect all faiths and in fact, support special govt. programs to help Muslims and Christians. Get your facts straight. PM Modi will toe the line until the next elections before any overt acts of strong-armed Hindu nationalism. He's a patient man. Islam is actually growing in India. Mosques are increasing greatly. So many Islamic universities and schools and businessmen. Modi hosted an international Muslim conference. He is very pro-Muslim, way more than Western leaders. Stop saying 'Hindu nationalism.' It's inaccurate.

Opinion | Narendra Modi’s Massive MandateOpinion: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decisively won a mandate for a second term. The question is whether he’ll use this victory to fulfill the economic reforms he failed to deliver in his first five years Modi won the election on the Basis of Religion & Nationalism. He has a choice to move India on the Democratic path & development or fanaticism that will destroy its democracy. International Version of Ravish Kumar !!! Hello Morons of ! Implementing nationwide GST is not reform in your moronic mind ? NaMo has delivered on economic reforms; seeing the level of incompetence & lack of integrity amongst economists, slow reforms r best, else it can be more of deform than reform !
