The Green party MEP for the south-west on why social justice is key to making the transition to a carbon-neutral economy by 2050

Molly Scott Cato can hardly contain herself. Having spent more than 30 years as an activist in the ecology and the sustainability movement, the Green MEP for the south-west region feels the UK is finally starting to appreciate the scale of the climate emergency. “People are suddenly waking up to it, which is very exciting for someone like me who’s been banging on about this for years,” she says.

Could you please cite the source of the data behind the statement that ' 70% of flights are taken by the richest 15% of people.' ? Is that for the UK or for the entire globe?

Cracking graphic from the BristolCouncil Mayor’s response to the Climate Emergency on this one, MollyMEP (Note the huge differences in levels of private car use and flights.)

This argument is counter productive. The burden and responsibility for climate change rests on the shoulders of ordinary people, not the rich and wealthy. We are the ones who consume, and it is that consumption that is causing climate change.

That David Attenborough gets about a bit, there's that.

Nah love, it’s you with all that hot air

The quest to end any personalresponsibility and shift the blame never changes and never ends, it seems. It's the masses (i.e every average person who makes damaging purchasing choices) whose aggregate pollution is the majority causal factor.

Work-shy steps to success; 1. Find a problem, then blame somebody with more money than you 2. Steal money from the wealthier people to 'solve' the problem 3. Profit $$$

Nothing to do with the sun obviously..

Very true

.

If you reduce inequality, won't more people be able to afford to fly...?

The wealthy sun.

Bollocks

Climate has been changing long before humans came on the scene.

Instead of spending their fortunes on ego trips to Mars, why don’t the super rich spend their money on benefiting the planet with green energy/climate change? The world will build numerous statues to them

Yes but they want the not so wealthy to pay extra and make the sacrifices to counter effect it 👍
