Buying a house to live in is a bad investment, says early retiree Kristy Shen in 'Quit Like a Millionaire.' It's only smart if you rent it out.

Owning a home isn't always the best investment, Kristy Shen of Millennial Revolution, who retired at age 31 as a millionaire, said in the book she co-authored,"Quit Like a Millionaire." In the excerpt below, she says that buying a house to live in is a"terrible investment" because it costs way more than the purchase price.

That is a calculated decision. Wow retired at the age of 31 as a millionaire. I'm inspired

I am eternally grateful to these FIREbrands taking their own paths. We could all learn from their frugal spending and income producing investments. I was able to retire at 60 and feel lucky to retire when I felt I needed to without fear.

tosinolaseinde, is this first world prescription or sound financial advice?

Buying a home should be a calculated decision. Usually home buyers make a wrong decision if they are basing it on their emotions. This post won’t be enough to explain all of the options but if anyone wants to know more, just message me. 👑 families own lots of RE. 🤔

I think this info is subjective. If you buy a house with equity already in it, buy in a state w/ no state tax, buy a low cost house (under $200k), & are a veteran who can avoid DP & PMi, it’ll make sense by the numbers & you can still rent it to others when you’re done. win/win.

Is this real for real?! Millionaires problems now is whether to buy a house?

Buying a house is great if you are incapable of investing or saving. Otherwise, your money is best utilized via investing.

No, but if you are a millionaire you can afford one.

Lol is this talk used to get people to rent and pay off a owners mortgage? “You don’t need to own a home, just rent mines”

Agree. Bought house in late 20's. While not the worst decision ever, could have built wealth much faster without it.

No one has the heart to tell that prepubescent boy that he is dating a transvestite.... or is it just me?
