Editorial: Evidence has grown that the lockout laws are having a chilling impact on Sydney’s night-time economy. It’s argued that Sydney is getting boring, which is bad for tourism

A group of right-wing MPs have angrily accused Premier Gladys Berejiklian of failing to follow proper process over the recent abortion bill. She withstood a revolt on that issue at the Liberal Party state conference over the weekend but she then set herself up again for a similar criticism - this time over the lockout laws.

That is why it made sense in May when a joint select committee inquiry on Sydney’s night-time economy was established to look at whether the lockout laws could be eased without bringing back the violence. The inquiry has been collecting evidence, including almost 800 submissions, from both opponents of the lockouts such as music promoters and hoteliers and supporters including the police and health workers.

Whatever the motivation, the vague announcement is hardly the best way to make policy on such a contentious and complicated issue.

St Vincent’s hospital emergency very quiet on weekends must create some work for them

The lockouts were the wrong solution in the first place. Sydney may never recover. Sydney is not a world city it is now a entertainment back water. No wonder Melbourne is surging ahead.

So sydney is boring if you can’t get drink at 4am?

Before the Olympics, so many high school friends were being told to get into hospitality because of the coming boom. Now you sold our culture and livelihood to the casinos.

Mass shooting = chilling Footage of armed robbery = chilling Journalist’s home raided = chilling Contempt of court case = chilling Sydney boring = chilling Hands up anyone who thinks our media needs a thesaurus.

All the coppers being used to police jaywalking, hiding behind bushes with hair dryers and running gestapo strip searches and other useless and/or revenue raising activities should be put in the cbd at night. Put a levy on late night alcohol service businesses to pay for it

So what? Tourists were being bashed, robbed and killed. A safer city. But fringe dwelling club owners are donating furiously to politicians? Drug traffickers cheering

I suppose it’s worth going back to the increase in violent assaults and rapes?

she just caved in to Clover Moore n d hotel lobby Scrapping lockout laws'd affect people's lives They could be maimed or die It is not a good reason that they need to scrap it for Syd to have fun night life Drink at home or atStar

OFFS der 🙄

Political correctness run amok. It's a king hit. That's what it is.
