The Trump administration is proposing tariffs on up to $2.4 billion worth of French imports, from Roquefort cheese to handbags, retaliation for France’s tax on American tech giants like Google, Amazon and Facebook. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative says France’s new digital services tax discriminates against U.S.

PARIS — Monday in retaliation for a French tax on tech giants including Google, Amazon and Facebook. French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said Tuesday on Radio Classique that the U.S. tariff threat is “simply unacceptable.” He said France has talked with the European Commission about EU-wide retaliatory measures.

He says the French tech tax is not discriminatory against the U.S. because it targets European and Chinese companies, too. France wants digital companies to pay their fair share of taxes in countries where they make money, and is pushing for an international agreement on the issue.

It's funny because it's France.

A Trump tariff is a tax paid by American consumers. No one ever lost money underestimating the intelligence of the American public.

I blame Putin. He wants that cheese for the Russian people

Riposte - reply.

JonLemire Don the con is out of control now. He's lashing out at France because China won't play his game. They don't need us as much as he thought they did.

Macron is weakening France.

This is in response to France's 'digital services' tax - basically, Google & FB have to pay a 3% tax on monitizing French eyeballs. It's meant to be a bridge to EU-wide tax of similar nature. The US should follow suit, not impede this idea.

Handbags...so people will buy his daughter's sweatshop made bullshit.

France must offer an equal access to their markets if they expect to trade in other countries' lucrative markets. If they're expecting some preferential treatment from the US, they will be waiting a very long time. It these products mean so much, trade fairly or not at all.

I hope trump do hit France with higher tariffs. The more he do to seperate the EU from U.S, the better. It's time to join the Brics and leave the failed U.S empire.

trump's tariffs AKA trumpTaxes is bringing down the entire world economy. And that is not beneficial for anyone. But it is a bit amusing to watch all those taxation hating Americans pay trumpTaxes on imports..

Ok for France to enact a digital tax on American companies and impose tariffs, but the whine when Pres Trump strikes back.

The Hawley-Smoot protective tariff pushed our world into the Great Depression of 1929. It was hailed as a victory for American manufacturing and farming. It happened because Herbert Hoover succumbed to desires of the rich and powerful who wanted to protect American industry.

Fair trade both sides ?

What is this? Blue cheese? Green cheese?

more farmers will end up on the dole thanks to Trump’s tarriff antics

America does not negotiate with terrorist. Bring it on, France.
