Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton has urged Australians to reconsider overseas travel as he concedes the coronavirus outbreak could have a major impact on the Australian economy.

Speaking with Sky News on Sunday, Mr Dutton warned it would be a “protracted issue” for the government with the number of inbound passengers out of mainland China “down dramatically”.

“There is no question it will have an impact on the economy, but the first priority of the government, at this point, is to make sure the health and wellbeing of Australians is the number one concern,” Mr Dutton said. “Obviously, we were concerned about the tourism industry particularly off the back of the bushfires, and we are now concerned with the impact on the economy. The government will have more to say about that in due course.
