Greens leader Adam Bandt says Australia is “at risk of going into a recession and the government needs to take a stimulus package seriously” amid a predicted hit to growth due to the coronavirus. The Treasury said it expected coronavirus will have a significant impact on the nation’s economy and growth by at least 0.5 percent in the March quarter. Mr Bandt told Sky News the Morrison Government needs “to get its hand on the steering wheel” amid increasing concerns about the spread of the virus.
“The Greens are prepared to play hardball in the Senate to ensure Australia is kept out of recession with a bottom-up transparent approach," he said. “If we don’t have measures for those living hand-to-mouth we could not only potentially make inequality worse, we could hasten the spread of the virus,” he said. “The disaster recovery allowance should be extended to people without paid sick leave who are impacted by the coronavirus.
