Analysis: Treasury now expects more than one million fewer Australians in the country by the end of 2022. That's akin to removing Adelaide from the national economy | swrighteconomy

Treasurers of all persuasions have kept this secret to themselves, relying on those extra people to enlarge the tax coffers. Unfortunately for Treasurer Josh Frydenberg, he can no longer rely on the population train to pull our economy in the right direction.

Interstate migration, a key contributor to Victoria's strong population growth over recent years, will be reversed. Instead of a net 17,000 people fleeing WA, South Australia and NSW to call the Garden State home, there will be a small exodus of Victorians to better economic climes. Melbourne was set to take over from Sydney as Australia's most populous city in 2025. That date has now been pushed back.

We should have more knowledge about a possible coronavirus vaccine at this point which could make an enormous difference to our economic fortunes. An early roll-out of a vaccine by the middle of the year is estimated to boost economic activity in the June quarter next year by $34 billion. Five months later, the May budget will be upon Frydenberg and the rest of the government. It is that budget which will be even more difficult than the one unveiled on Tuesday night.

swrighteconomy Don't tempt me....

swrighteconomy Real GDP per capita has essentially stagnated since the GFC and we were on a downtrend even before COVID.

swrighteconomy But not all of us care about the economy. So this is good news as far as I’m concerned.

swrighteconomy Excellent news. Keep these coming, less immigration is GOOD !!

swrighteconomy And we had all those people paying to come here that we paid to go away.

swrighteconomy What's that, if you keep funneling money upward to the older and wealthier, young people who can't even buy a house or have secure work don't have kids? What a shock.

swrighteconomy There won’t be one million fewer Australians in Australia. There will be one million fewer non-Australians in Australia.
