Poor animal welfare consideration, lack of ante-mortem inspection, poor dressing of butchers and meat inspectors, overcrowded abattoirs and poor post-mortem inspection have been identified as some of the factors responsible for poor meat hygiene standard in Lagos State.
The campaign was a public health awareness aimed at educating members of the public on the dangers of consuming unhygienically processed meat and meat products, with the sole aim of fostering healthy living among Lagosians. The chairman revealed that lack of provision for compensation of butchers whose animals were declared unfit for consumption is one of the basic factors responsible for the poor meat hygiene standard.
