Lackluster holiday sales reported by Macy's and Kohl's are calling into question whether such mall-based chains can compete in a changing landscape where shoppers are shifting more of their spending online.

Did all of my shopping online

I can pick up from my Amazon locker in my bank...

Omni Channel has been a threat since it started. Now stores have very less traffic than online.

who wants to shop in the third-world hellscape of today’s mall or department store

Their sales sucked this year

Lower your prices! Be competitive and you will do better.

The issue is cheap, ugly, poorly manufactured, and overpriced merchandise that no one wants because their closets are already stuffed full of it. Nothing is arranged, everything is piled up and by the gross and it smells like chemicals because that’s what it is made of.

Kohl's/ 40% off this item that is 40% overpriced already. What a deal!!!

why go out and fight with crowds and possibly even get a better deal and have it delivered to boot? I am every bit for more jobs for Human Beings but to be perfectly honest places like Amazon are the new Sears and Roebuck.

May be not enough to sell online they’ll have to partner to offer variety and swift delivery better than pizza

They can’t.

My wife buys plenty online from Kohl's.

Prediction, Kohl's will go the way of Mervyn's. Their goods are over priced for the low quality offered. Also, Macy's prices are too high.

It's too bad because I shop at both online where their selection is larger and it's easier to search for exactly what I want. Their online distribution chain is reliable and I can return anything easily to the brick & morter. I've had nothing but problems with Target's online.

If they were caught off guard, maybe they need new leadership

It’s the end game for most brick and mortar stores now and in the future.

Offer lower prices to shoppers who buy in the store retail retailers

There's NO reversing this, nor need there be...so carry on!

Familiarize yourself with seph_lawless and you will wonder no more

Let’s see. Order from Prime, and get it at your door in two days. Drive to the store, spend gas, weave through poorly supervised kids, stand in line for 30 min. It’s a mystery.

Well they had lackluster sales...TBH.

The answer is no. It has been for the past 5 years.

after you are immune to gimmicks these stores use to lure buyers at prices that even on sale are too much, they become places you go to make sure your true 'but I cut out carbs diet' size hasn't changed. then order online 😀 start pricing clothes for what they really are worth

Spoiler: no they cannot.

People don’t want crap they don’t need.

Hey Kohl's, I'd shop at your stores more if I didn't get hit up to sign up for your credit card, plus a follow-up mailed letter, every time I shop there! Your clothes are pretty cool, but I don't like to be annoyed!

Blame Amazon.

Might as well return Black Friday to 6am Friday after Thanksgiving

Tried to go Christmas shopping this year. Not enough cashiers and no inventory. Ended up doing all my shopping online.

Also the sharp economic downturn?

jaeeamour

I think shoppers are sick of gimmicks and these two chains employ them a great deal.

Narrator: They couldn't

Thanks a lot Millennials, and capitalism.

Department stores fight for life in Amazon era, says former Toys R Us CEO'Even if Macy's does everything right, it may not be enough.' Former Toys 'R' Us CEO Gerald Storch said that online shopping is a threat to department stores. 'Traditional department stores are fighting for their lives in an Amazon era.' Who can afford to buy anything now? Macy's has low quality, overpriced products the only people that shop there are people that haven't realized that they can spend their money better somewhere else. The employees online are much nicer also! Technology is technology. I love Amazon and have for many years now.
