As figures show the UK economy performed better than expected in January - what is behind the surprise good news for the Chancellor? Our economics reporter Neil MacDonald explains.

That follows other recent figures suggesting that the country might just about avoid a recession. The Chancellor today said there “was a long way to go” but a stronger economy would give him more room to manoeuvre in his Budget next week.
