Authorities are urging Australians adventuring outdoors to “be mindful” of their surroundings and exercise caution, after a woman died and another was seriously injured when they fell on nature walks a week apart. In NSW, a woman died falling 50m from a popular lookout near Nowra on the South Coast on Monday. The woman was walking with friends and family along the McKenzie’s Saddle Walking Track in the Moreton State Conservation Area near Buangla when she fell at McKenzie’s lookout, police say.
A 13-year-old boy fell to his death in front of three others at the lookout in 2019. Visitors have boasted online about the “breathtaking views” at the unfenced lookout, describing it as a “lovely hidden lookout without guard rails” that features a “vertical drop below”. “This area is not an area that a lot of people go to. But in saying that, you can imagine how many unfenced clearings there are all around Australia and through the Great Dividing Range,” Hoyer said.
