A miner was threatened with an axe and two others were injured when several people illegally entered a Northern Territory island minesite. Up to five people, some armed with axes, entered the Groote Eylandt Mining Company site at 2am on Saturday, September 30. NT Police say the group allegedly damaged the facility and threatened one worker with an axe. Another worker was cut when they were struck in the chest with a blunt object. A third worker suffered an eye injury when a window was smashed.
A 17-year-old was charged with offences including criminal damage, deprivation of liberty, aggravated assault and aggravated robbery. He was bailed to appear in court on November 10. A 20-year-old man was charged with seven offences including recklessly endangering serious harm, deprivation of liberty, aggravated assault and theft. He was remanded to appear in court on November 15.
