Two grade six students trick-or-treating in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs sprang into action on Tuesday when they heard a cry for help from an elderly woman’s home. Grandmother-of-six Esma O’Neill, 81, had fallen inside her Wattletree Rd unit in Ferntree Gully. She was badly injured and unable to move.
Esma was taken to hospital, where she received surgery on Wednesday for a broken leg. Roy described their experience as “a bit scary”. Esma’s son, Dean, was emotional as he expressed his gratitude for the boys’ bravery. “They’d propped Mum up with some pillows behind her lounge chair and one of them just comforted her,” he told 7NEWS. “I’m so proud of you two,” he told the boys. “When I think about it now, you can hear it in my voice, it’s very emotional, to have that presence of mind.
