Households struggling to cope with soaring power bills will get a one-off payment of up to $125. nathanhondros: This policy really lacks a good basis in sound governing. The Opposition will call this a bribe, a cash grab for votes. MORE: thefrontpage

Economics columnist Terry McCrann has rubbished Labor’s plan to increase the minimum wage and urged the party to shift its focus towards tax cuts and energy prices. Opposition leader Bill Shorten has promised to raise the minimum wage to a 'living wage' so that no full-time worker lives in poverty.

The party’s policy proposal has come under fire by its opponents who say it will lead to mass job losses in an uncertain economy. Mr McCrann says Australia is suffering through an ‘insane situation where we are paying more for Australian gas than Japanese customers’ and the nation’s leaders need to ‘actually deliver in the right places’. nathanhondros I'd much prefer $900 ea (plus CPI)...i had to buy a HWS for the house I sold 10 years ago. we could buy more this time around, putting it back into the economy, better than $125 to going to a utility company!
