Opinion: Closing official border crossings won’t stop migrants from entering illegally, but it would damage the economy of both countries—and not merely at the border

President Trump is threatening to shut down all legal crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border, and let’s hope this is negotiating bluster and not a plan. It’s hard to imagine a more self-destructive decision, and it wouldn’t solve the border asylum crisis in any event.

We sympathize with Mr. Trump’s frustration with waves of Central Americans trying to enter the U.S. without waiting in line as immigrants from other countries do. The President is charged with protecting the homeland, and the migrant surge has overwhelmed U.S....

How would fencing our own property would damage economy, there could be a hole in the pocket, but it would not be as big as maintaining the trespassers.

Walls work. Ask Israel. 60,000 illegal entries per month is a crisis. Closing the border to walking entries will help that.

But it will help with the stock shares for 'for profit' private faculties...😉

Or a 3rd option and force Mexico through an economic vise to quit hand walking these illegals to the U.S..

B S....

Hello...the point of the exercise would be to inflict economic pain on Mexico until their government starts taking border security seriously.

Just as senior citizens are selling their homes because of rising medical costs, hospital stays, never mind the ambulance bills; the illegal immigrants get preffered treatment through our hard earned tax dollars. Build That Much Needed Wall Already

Let's do it and find out.

How about a story that tells the people how much illegal immigration costs this country 😬

Spin, Spin,Spin? WSJ. Fact is, you really don’t know if closing the border will only bring bad. Most logical people will find both, some bad, but, also a lot of good😎

So how about closing the official border but opening the one for economy? Oh yeah, by the way, I can't read the article because I don't pay, but I can still give comments.

B’gock No credibility

Damaged more than $135 billion/yr in illegal costs and a few avocado's?

positioning this as an 'asylum crisis' is ridiculous. shame on you.

We need to protect the american people. Well built walls work.i see why I cancelled your subscription. What a bunch of jerks.

Hey guess what will stop migrants from entering illegally between the closed border crossings? I'll give you a hint. It's four letters and begins with the letter W.

FINALLY, the fact-based reasoning that the WSJ has long been known for.

Close it anyhow!! realDonaldTrump Then we got to get back on that cleancoal thing

Our shit-for-brains POTUS doesn't care!! His mindless drone followers think this will work cause he'll tell them it does.
