A man has been charged with causing the death of a teenage motorbike rider in an alleged hit-and-run in Townsville. The 19-year-old man died shortly after arriving in hospital after suffering critical injuries in the crash in Heatley about 4.40pm last Tuesday. Police believe he was struck head-on by a silver Holden Commodore while he was riding a Husqvarna dirt bike on a service road. A 31-year-old Kirwan man was allegedly driving the Commodore, which was found abandoned in Kirwan.
The man allegedly declined to come forward to police before he was identified as the alleged driver after an “extensive investigation”, police said in a statement. He was arrested in Innisfail, about 250km north of Townsville, on Sunday. He has been charged with dangerous driving causing death and driving unlicensed. 7NEWS.com.au understands the incident is not being treated by police as a case of vigilantism gone wrong, but rather an accident as a result of misadventure.
