New Zealand snooker icon Dene O’Kane has died after a fall in his home. He was 61. O’Kane was rushed to Auckland Hospital but died on Tuesday after failing to recover from the incident in his Waiheke Island home. He was surrounded by family when he passed, including his beloved mother, who say he died from a severe brain bleed. The family are still piecing together the details of his accident. The snooker legend is being remembered as the greatest Kiwi ever to pick up a cue.
At the peak of his powers, he reached as high as 18th in the world snooker rankings and twice made the quarter-finals at the World Championships, in 1987 and 1992. He was also a three-time World Masters Championships winner, having saluted in 2004, 2005 and 2008. O’Kane’s career winnings tally reached just shy of $800,000AUD. His cousin, Richard O’Kane, said the family is hurting. “We are grieving - he will be very sorely missed,” he told the New Zealand Herald.
