But workers will only receive just under $20 billion of the package in the four years covered by this budget. They will receive an offset worth up to $550 in 13 weeks but will have to wait until after the elections due in 2022 and 2025 to collect the full benefits.
While the government was expected to offer another round of personal tax cuts in this budget, it has trumped Labor by unveiling the biggest personal tax cut since the Howard government. Finance Minister Mathias Cormann said Australians would have to decide "who do they trust" to deliver income-tax relief.
Senator Cormann said he did not want to "haggle" in the upper house and would instead seek a mandate at the election for the full package. While billed as a "surplus budget", it does not bring forward the date at which the Commonwealth will end a series of deficits worth a combined $364.5 billion since 2008.
